Select McLean HS Philharmonic students performed at the re-dedication of the German-American Friendship Garden in the heart of Washington, DC on Friday, April 11th. The garden was re-dedicated by the Embassy of Germany after a restoration this past November. The garden is located on Constitution Avenue, below the Washington Monument and across from the White House. Students performed various pieces, including the national anthem of Germany and the Star Spangled Banner to start off the event. With the cherry blossoms in full bloom and the garden starting to bud, the re-dedication made for a very picturesque, enjoyable start to spring for all! See article written by the German Embassy, encompassing the afternoon's events here: -->CLICK HERE<-- On the second day of the Symphonic/Concert orchestra's competition trip to NYC, students took an extensive bus/walking tour throughout New York City, exploring Central Park, cathedrals, major landmarks, famous buildings, etc. One highlight included a visit to Strawberry Fields inside Central Park, a portion of the park dedicated to John Lennon after his assassination, neighboring Yoko Ono's current residence. Another highlight was visiting St. John of the Divine Cathedral to see their limited time Phoenix exhibit. Our tour guide was sure to point of important statues, art galleries, celebrity apartment complexes, and other buildings. What an awesome, detailed adventure to learn so much of New York City's history! After the tour, we enjoyed a entertaining dinner at the spooky Jekyll & Hyde Restaurant in the heart of Time Square! Waiters and waitresses donned creepy costumes and the restaurant was designed as a sort of haunted house with surprises everywhere! The night ended with an absolutely amazing visit to Avery Fisher Hall at the Lincoln Center to see the New York Philharmonic perform Bruckner's Symphony No. 9 and Vivier's Orion! On the first day of our Concert/Symphonic Orchestra's trip to New York City, we had lunch at Rockefeller Center, participated in a fabulous workshop with Michael Adelson, visited the 911 memorial, enjoyed dinner at the Bubba Gump Shrimp Co., following by some time to explore Time Square! |
